How To Choose The Right Scooter For Me

Before you invest in a scooter, it’s important to consider your needs and make sure it has everything you’re looking into for a fuel efficient scooter. Here’s everything you need to know about scooters and the main factors to consider while you’re comparing your options.

Speed & Engine Size

The most important thing to think about is the engine size. This is measured in cubic centimeters (cc), and scooters can range from as little as 50cc all the way up to 250cc or more.

As a general rule of thumb, the higher the cc, the higher the maximum speed. Start by thinking about where you plan on riding and how fast you’ll need to go, then use that to help you make a decision.

If you only plan on scooting around a college campus with a 30mph speed limit on flat terrain, a 50cc will probably be sufficient. If you want to travel in the 40-60mph range or ride on hilly terrain, you’ll benefit from a larger engine—aim for something in the 125-175cc range. And if you want to drive your scooter on the freeway, you should be aiming for a 250+cc plus engine.

All the scooters we sell have 150cc motor engines and can reach speeds of 55mph+. This is the ‘sweet spot’ as it offers good performance, with more than enough power to quickly get from A to B, even if you have hills to contend with.

Another factor to consider is whether the engine is 2-stroke or 4-stroke. 2-stroke engines tend to be cheaper but 4-stroke engines are more fuel-efficient.

Sizing

It’s important to choose a scooter that fits you comfortably. A comfortable fit will make you feel more confident while riding.

Ideally, you should be able to touch the ground comfortably while straddling the seat. Check the dimensions of the model and think about the height from the ground to the seat. The right size for you will depend on how tall/short you are.

The width of the seat matters too. You don’t want to feel squashed in while you’re riding, so choose something with enough wiggle room for you to feel comfortable.

The best way to get an idea of whether or not a scooter is a good fit for you is to try it out. You can drop into our Sacramento dealership and get a feel for the scooter you’re interested in before you buy.

Weight Limit

Different scooters have different max loading weights. Depending on the model, this can range from 200-350lbs+. Most of the scooters we sell at ATV Wholesale Outlet have a 330lbs max load limit, which should suffice to accommodate the weight of most riders plus some luggage.

Style

Of course, it’s not all about the functionality—the design matters too. Scooters come in many different shapes and colors. You’ll want to choose something that matches your personal sense of style.

Do you prefer classic, Italian-style scooters? Or are you looking for something a little more sporty and rugged?

If you’re in the former camp, check out the Bello-150. It features a timeless, classy design reminiscent of the 60s, with beautiful dual-tone paint and elegant white-wall tires. For something more rugged, try the Rover-150. It features a more masculine design, with a military-inspired style and retro headlights.

Tires

Tire size is another important factor to consider. Small wheels are great for maneuvering around tight corners and navigating traffic in urban settings, but bigger wheels offer more cushioning when you go over bumps and potholes.

Storage Capabilities

Don’t forget to think about storage. Some scooters offer more storage capacity than others. Most units come with under-seat storage to protect your valuables, but some, like the Avenza-150 SE, also come with lockable rear trunk storage for even more space.

Extra Features

Aside from the above, it’s also worth thinking about any big features you’re looking for. Some scooters come with additional bells and whistles that can make your riding experience more convenient and enjoyable.

Look out for a port charger if you want to be able to charge your phone or other devices while you drive. A windshield that protects you from wind and dust is also worth having.

The Rover-150’s adjustable 2-way seat position is another nice feature to have. You can put the back seat down when you want to carry 2 passengers and move it up to create a flat cargo bed for easy hauling.

Scooter Frequently Asked Questions

Yes you do. There’s a lot of confusion regarding California’s for motorcycle and scooter license requirements. Here’s the guidelines straight from the DMV. https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/motorcycle-handbook/license-requirements/

As you can see, our 150cc scooters are categorized under the title of ‘Motor-Driven Cycle’, which require an M1 Motorcycle license to operate on the street.

This would include smaller engine scooters such as 50cc mopeds, which by law require an M1 motorcycle license to operate.

All of our scooters meet EPA and CARB emission standards. We offer in-house registration and a temporary license plate at the time of purchase to help get you on the road as soon as you leave!

Chinese scooters are inexpensive and offer much better value for money than Japanese and European scooter brands. Despite the affordable price, Chinese scooters are also well-made and can easily last a decade or more with proper maintenance.

Their main downside is that it can be tough to find scooter mechanics that work with Chinese models. Fortunately, that isn’t a problem when you buy from ATV Wholesale Outlet in Sacramento Ca.

We operate a fully-stocked repair shop with spare parts for all the brands we sell, and our in-house technicians are experts in repairing and maintaining Chinese models, so you can buy with complete peace of mind.
